The short answer
Tarot uses a question and illustrated cards to help you look at a situation from another angle. It is best used for reflection, not as proof of a fixed future.
What happens in a tarot reading?
You begin with one situation or question. Cards are drawn from a 78-card deck, usually in positions that give each card a job: the situation, an influence, a choice or a possible next step.
The reader combines each card's traditional meaning with its position and your question. The same card can therefore support different conversations.
How should I ask a tarot question?
A useful question gives the reading room to explain. What should I understand before I change jobs usually produces a more useful reflection than asking whether one event will happen on one date.
Keep the question about a decision you can influence. Name the real concern, avoid asking for private facts about another person, and use one reading for one main question.
What do upright and reversed cards mean?
Many readers use both upright and reversed meanings. Upright often describes the card's direct expression; reversed can suggest delay, imbalance, an inward theme or something needing attention.
A reversed card is not automatically bad. The surrounding cards and the question matter more than a simple positive-or-negative label.
What can tarot not establish?
Tarot is a traditional interpretive practice. It cannot establish a medical diagnosis, legal outcome, financial return, another person's private thoughts or a guaranteed event.
A responsible reading should leave you with clearer options and questions, not fear or dependence. You remain responsible for the decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can tarot predict the future with certainty?
No. Tarot is an interpretive practice for reflection and cannot guarantee a future event.
What makes a useful tarot question?
Ask one open question about a situation or decision you can influence instead of demanding a fixed yes-or-no prediction.
